This is part of a series of posts discussing the 5 Values of The Oak House.  You can see all the posts by clicking here.

Values are very important to me personally.  They define why we do things the way we do them.  They are snapshots into the guidelines through which we live our lives.  Values are how we make the lines we are willing to cross and the lines we aren’t willing to cross.  I think every business should have them too.

To be clear, I’m not talking about some generic catch phrases or buzzwords with inspirational quotes under them.  They have to have meaning.  They have to be searched for.  They have to be fought over, they have to be unearthed with blood, sweat, and tears.  In order for values to be true, they have to be what you ARE about not what you WISH you were about.

When you are starting a new business, you get to choose your values.  Most of the time, the business values are a direct reflection of the values of the person starting the business.  Let’s be honest though, most of the time the person starting the business could care less about crafting the values of their business.  They are mostly worried about making payroll and other critical priorities.  There is nothing wrong with doing such, but I believe that if you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything.

The Oak House has 5 values.  They were carefully selected and crafted in a very particular way.  You could say they are our standards of conduct.  If, at the end of the day, we get nothing else right, we know we are doing the right thing if all of our decisions were made with these 5 values in mind.  They are:

  • Lead With Love
  • Serve and Be Served
  • Keep It Simple
  • Make It Better
  • Every Moment Matters

Each of those values have a short descriptor sentence, our “beliefs”, associated with it so you know what we mean when we say them.

  • We believe when you lead with love, you have the advantage.
  • We believe the best way to build relationships is through mutual service.
  • We believe the simplest solution is usually the best solution.
  • We believe striving for excellence inspires others to do the same.
  • We believe in seizing every opportunity to make an impact.

I’ll go further into detail on the Values in individual posts, but I wanted to give you an overview of why we will operating the way we will be.  Do you have a set of personal values to guide yourself through life?  I would love to hear about them.
